1) those in my area are not in such bad shape and, best of all, they are not marked up like some privately owned used books. I like to mark up books and it gets confusing when my underlines, notes, etc. are mixed with someone else's.
2) history is constantly being rewritten. I like to see what it was before those currently in power rewrote it.
I buy discarded library books for two reasons:
